The Section 8 Program assists low income,
handicapped, elderly and disabled persons with rental costs.
The Section 8 Program allows families or individuals
assistance in renting affordable, safe, and good places to
live.
Recipients of the Section 8 subsidy are required
to pay a portion of their income towards the rent. Roughly
30% of household income is applied to the rent the remainder
of the rent is paid directly to the landlord through the MDOC.
Households can remain on the Section 8 Program
until 30% of their household income exceeds the amount of
rent charged for the unit they live in.
1. Your household includes one of the following:
- Yourself and one or more family members.
- A single person 62 years of age or
older or a single person who is disabled or handicapped.
- Persons who are handicapped, disabled
or 62 years of age or older who live with other persons
also handicapped, disabled or over 62, or who live with
someone who takes care of them.
- Persons displaced by governmental
action or natural disaster.

Currently the waiting list is about 18
months. Applicants are always encouraged to apply and every
effort is made to keep the waiting list as short as possible.
Please be sure to keep your address on the waiting
list current and feel free to contact the HRDC Housing Advocates
at any time to check on your status.
Applicants are notified in writing and
an appointment is made with a Housing Advocate for an orientation
and eligibility determination. In some cases the applicant
can apply the voucher to the unit they are currently renting
if not they are given up to 120 days to find a new place to
live.
Voucher values are determined by the Montana
Department of Commerce and are reflective of the local rental
market.
The Section 8 Program allows the landlords
to determine what utilities the tenant is responsible for
paying. Section 8 participants, required to pay for the cost
of their heat, are encouraged to apply for assistance through
the Low Income
Energy Assistance Program.

The HRDC Emergency Rental Assistance Program
helps persons who are homeless secure long term housing and
assists households that have been issued an eviction notice
based on failure to pay rent.
Assistance is provided in emergency cases only.
Applicants must verify their homeless status or show proof
of eviction.
The family must have experienced a sudden or
unexpected drop in income and there needs to be a current
source of income to show how the rent will be paid for the
following month.
This assistance is one time only.

Permission from the landlord to accept money
from the HRDC on behalf of the tenant is also required. A
landlord information form is provided to the applicant.
Funding is limited for the program so
all applications will be done on a first come first serve
basis. Applicants must be determined eligible before any rent
payments can be made.
