HRDC'S ENERGY ASSISTANCE AND CONSERVATION PROGRAMS

Applications | Weatherization Assistance Program | Income Eligibility

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) provides eligible households with help in paying winter heating bills (October - May). The program pays benefits of fixed amounts based on household income and resources. An additional benefit is available to eligible households having a high energy burden. Eligibility is based on annual income and resources and the number of household members. Payments towards the heating bills are made directly to the heat source vendor. Homeowners and renters are both eligible.

Energy Share of Montana helps households in an energy related emergency. Energy Share funds are donated dollars that can be loaned or granted to a household depending on income criteria. Some examples of energy emergencies are: shut-off notice pending from the power company, inability to secure housing due to past debt, repair or replacement of furnaces and damages that affect the ability to heat the home. All funds are distributed by an Energy Share Board of Directors and are limited. Funds are loaned without interest. www.energysharemt.com

Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to assist low-income households reduce their heating bills by providing home energy efficiency services. The program operates year round. After a household is determined eligible HRDC's weatherization staff schedule an energy inspection of the home. The inspection determines the energy and health and safety concerns of the home and the inspector then completes a job write up listing recommendations. A contractor is hired to complete the work at no cost to the occupants. Typical work completed includes air sealing, attic and/or side wall insulation, weatherstripping, and minor repairs associated with the weatherization work. Heating system work or replacement may also be completed. Qualification is based on LIEAP Program eligibility. Due to limited funding priority points are given to households with members who are elderly, handicapped or who have children under 7. Tenants (with landlord approval) as well as homeowners are eligible for weatherization.
